What is a Retainer for Teeth?

Retainers for your teeth are used to prevent shifting in your teeth from occurring. Most people think of retainers as used with braces. That is no longer the case as many individuals wear different types of retainers just to help keep their teeth straight and to mitigate other problems not associated with braces.

There are different types of retainers for teeth—fixed and removable—and the type you might need depends on your individual circumstances and is best determined by your dentist. One size does not fit all that is for sure.

Fixed Retainers

Fixed retainers for teeth are an option for patients who might have trouble remembering to wear their retainer every day. This type of retainer uses a wire that is stretched across the backs of the teeth and is cemented in place.

Because fixed retainers are bonded to the backs of the teeth, they cannot be removed and must be carefully cleaned. However, they are usually the most effective at keeping teeth in place they can’t be taken out easily and then put back in.

Removable Retainers

Removable retainers typically consist of a wire that goes across the front of the teeth and an acrylic piece with hooks that holds the wire in place.

While removable retainers are less work to keep clean than fixed retainers, they can be more easily lost or damaged and can get expensive if the lost or the dog uses them as something to chew on.
